Walking a spiritual path can be difficult in today’s world. There are times when it feels like we’ve lost our connection altogether.

One of the questions that came up in our Mystery School coaching call this month was about just this. A member asked:

“How can I reconnect with my spiritual path after feeling disconnected during a time of major life changes, stress, and loss? I’m not feeling any connection with journeying, listening to my guides and so on, even getting out for a walk in nature seems a chore.”

If you’re feeling adrift on your path and longing to re-establish your connection, this blog is for you.

We’ve just returned from our deep summer retreat in the beautiful woodland of Cae Mabon in Snowdonia. Time spent immersed in community, nature, and connection with the sacred, which are three things philosopher and psychiatrist Dr Iain McGilchrist says are essential for a well human being, was profoundly soul-enriching.

In our closing ceremony, we stood in a circle and sang a song together: finding our way back home. Retreating away like this is one way to really drop into our spiritual path. But, of course, it’s only for a short time. It isn’t every day. So, what can we do in our everyday lives to help reignite that important connection and hear the messages of our spirit guides?

Why we lose our way

All kinds of things can knock us off course: grief, stress, illness, supporting family members through challenges, major life transitions, or simply… life.

I remember a time when I felt my spiritual connection had been lost.

I stopped being able to go on shamanic journeys and even struggled to go out and spend time in nature. These are the main ways I receive direct guidance from my spirit guides and it happened during a time when I needed support the most.

It was my final year working in the corporate world teaching about climate change. Looking back, I was coming to the end of a career that wasn’t right for me, although I didn’t know that at the time. The stress was immense. I was consumed, overwhelmed and I couldn’t access my connection.

It’s often the way: when we most need spiritual support, it feels furthest away. This is disheartening and disillusioning. It can even feel like our spirit guides have abandoned us. But this isn’t the case. What’s really happening is that we’ve closed off our senses so we can’t hear them anymore.

That disconnection is probably a sign of something bigger that needs addressing, but first, we just need a way to touch back in.

The truth is…

Spiritual guidance is everywhere. We simply need to change the focus of our attention to see it. If you are struggling to get your spiritual connection, you haven’t lost your path, it is just there’s just too much going on right now for you to notice it.

So here are five simple ways to reignite your spiritual connection, without requiring much effort or focus.

Five ways to reconnect

  1. Plan a trip to a special place.
Somewhere that’s been calling you. Maybe an ancient sacred site like a stone circle, burial mound or sacred spring. Or a natural place like a mountain, lake, or river. Put it in your diary and take yourself there, just for you. The reason you are thinking of this place is because it is calling you and has something to say. Ignore all the reasons your mind is telling you why you can’t go and follow that tug.
  2. Follow the Wheel of the Year.
Look at when the next turn of the wheel is – the solstices, equinoxes, Beltane, Lammas, Samhain, and Imbolc. Mark that time in your diary to take time out. Do whatever feels right, ideally something aligned with the energy of the season. (If you need ideas, here’s our free guide.) At the time of writing this blog, the next turn is the Autumn Equinox. It is a time of balance and the perfect moment to ask the question: How can I bring more balance into my life.
  3. Pull an oracle card.
Ask a question and see what comes. It’s quick and simple, and can give remarkable insights.
  4. Step outside.
If a walk feels too much, just sit in your garden or local park. Intend to notice something in nature, such as an animal encounter or a tree that draws you. Look up its symbolic meaning and see what message it holds.
  5. Watch for synchronicities.
As Einstein said, “Coincidence is God’s way of staying anonymous.” When mentions of a book, place, course, or event keeps appearing in your life in different ways, it’s often more than chance. It’s a nudge from your spirit guides, inviting you to pay attention.

Trust the return

Your spiritual connection will return. Try to let go of guilt or despair about it being absent. Instead, nourish yourself with small things you actually want to do, not what you think you should do.

Alongside seeking out connection, notice what might be getting in the way. It is often that life circumstances are beyond our control and they need to run their course, which takes time. But one thing you can do right away today is reduce your engagement with draining inputs such as social media, news, WhatsApp and emails. These are addictive, alluring, but rarely nourishing.

Replace that time with something that sparks awe. Put your attention where it fills you: in community, in nature, in things that bring wonder.

At the simplest level, if you’re a Mystery School member, swap Netflix or Facebook scrolling for one of our Earthlight Films or dive into Becoming Nature, Jason’s nature connection offerings through Earthlight. Just one small change like this each evening can make all the difference.

You haven’t lost your path. It’s still right there in front of you. You just need to give yourself the space to see it again.

  • This is what I needed to read, I feel sometimes I am making it all up, or I need to be doing more, seeing more. Which doesn’t help my mental health or spiritual health. I feel I need to relax around life and see the small things.

    • I am so pleased this blog has been helpful Gill. It is great how you have spotted what you need to do. Perhaps pick one or two of the things I have suggested and give them a go and see how you get on.

  • This was such a breath of fresh air to read. I feel that this year has been quite heavy for many of us, I see and feel the loss off connection too. I’ve been processing grief and deep emotions and it’s not been easy. I have felt lost and consumed by this state and trying my way back home too. I will definitely check out the Mystery school as it sounds like something I need these days

  • Oh my word, just put a post in the group about bumblebee, scrolled down, found this. Timing and trust. Thank you so much. 27.8.25

  • We’re all in such difficult times right now I don’t think I know anyone who isn’t stressed. I’m certainly going through a tricky time but frequently turn to Jason’s films – I find them an absolute lifesaver, to be able to immerse myself in such beautiful places for a short while helps me to reset & carry on. Great blog, thank you for all you both do x

    • Sorry to hear that you are in a tricky time Gaynor, but so lovely to hear that Jason’s films are helping. Also really delighted you like my blog. Thank you Gaynor

  • Lovely to read this, Nicola. When I feel disconnected and lost, I head for the mystery school, or Jason’s earthlight or becoming nature , poetry, curiosity blogs etc and randomly scroll through all the links. Sooner or later something catches my attention and I’m off. Different things catch me at different times. It is a wonderful resource that you have both put together for us.

  • I know little about the Shamanic Path and have walked a different spiritual path throughout my long life. Your words and guidance make beautiful sense and I thank you for this. This communication has landed in my heart at a difficult time in my life where I do feel somewhat disconnected from my spirit guides. Please keep the sharing coming.
I will take your guidance which felt full of love and wisdom. 🕉️ Om Shanti

  • Hi Nicola.
I have been doing meditations for world peace for a few weeks now but prior to that I had felt very disconnected spiritually.
That, and the fact that your blog/offer of the free e-book arrived today, (great timing) has given me hope that my spiritual disconnection was just a blip .. I do love a synchronicity 🙂
    Many thanks, Sue

    • Ooo I have just skipped a beat. I love a good synchronicity too Sue. They really do help, don’t they. I am so pleased my blog has been divinely timed for you! Thanks so much for your note.
