Why Are So Many People Turning to Shamanism?
Over the past decade, interest in shamanism has skyrocketed in the UK. The 2021 census recorded a tenfold increase in people stating shamanism as their religion. But why? What’s behind this shift?
Crisis sparks questioning. As the world faces mounting uncertainty—climate change, political instability, artificial intelligence, many are realising that something fundamental is missing. The modern day ways of living, of understanding ourselves and our place in the world, are no longer working. And so, people are searching.
Western civilisation offers few real answers, built as it is on unstable foundations. Yet beneath it - before the rise of modern society - there was a way of living in harmony with the Earth that made sense. Many indigenous cultures still honour this way of being, showing us that we don’t have to look far to remember and reclaim what was once known.
Shamanism, an ancient and deeply rooted spiritual practice, is emerging as the answer.
My Personal Awakening

Everyone has their own story of how they came to shamanism. Here’s mine.
I was in my early thirties and had a successful career working in corporate sustainability but work was incredibly stressful. Despite achieving everything I had set out to, something wasn’t right. From the outside, my life looked fine. But inside, I felt lost and was falling apart. My decisions weren’t bringing me happiness. My future felt just as overwhelming - big mortgage, relentless 60-hour workweeks, travelling away from home, losing touch with myself. My health, relationships and quality of life were diminishing.
My role was to educate big businesses about climate change, but it felt like carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. I could clearly see the urgent action required, yet the response was slow, inadequate, and far from the scale needed to make a real difference. The stress was immense, and at night, I was plagued by apocalyptic nightmares.
I now know this feeling has a name: climate anxiety. Back then, I just felt terrified for the future. I had to remain calm and encouraging in my professional role, but inside, I was breaking.
This crisis - both personal and global - forced me to ask the big questions. What is this all really about? What is the bigger picture?
That questioning led me back to spirituality. I had tried various spiritual paths over the years since leaving my Christian faith as a teenager, but nothing I explored truly resonated. Until one day, in a mentoring session, someone introduced me to the idea of earth-based spirituality - a fusion of my two topics of interest: Earth care and spirituality.
That was the moment everything clicked. It felt like coming home.
The Ancient Wisdom We Left Behind

I sought out teachers who could guide me. Not all were the right fit, but as the saying goes, when the student is ready, the teacher appears. In time, I was fortunate to find some fabulous teachers I could learn from and who supported me through the transition in my life that followed.
Now, this awakening is happening at a larger scale. Shamanism is no longer a niche interest - it’s a growing movement.
People are waking up and realising they’ve been disconnected from nature, from each other, from themselves. They sense a void they can no longer ignore. They’re no longer satisfied filling it with material distractions, such as alcohol, food, shopping, endless scrolling on social media. They’re looking for something real.
And that’s why shamanism is rising.
The Lost Connection
Our severance from nature began long ago, even documented in the Bible in Genesis, Chapter 1, where humanity was set apart from the natural world. But it wasn’t always this way. Alternative accounts of that time speak not of domination, but of entwining with nature, like lovers, deeply connected and inseparable. Then, shift from hunter-gatherers to farming introduced ownership, hierarchy, and control. Over the last few thousand years this has gone through several phases bringing us to the present day. Now our disconnection from nature, from the Earth, has a clinical name: Nature Deficit Disorder.
But the great awakening is here. People are remembering. They are rediscovering the wisdom of the land, the spirits, the Otherworld. They are finding their way back home.

What Shamanism Offers
Shamanism is rising because it provides exactly what modern life lacks:
And perhaps most importantly, shamanism offers a way to stand strong in the face of crisis. In a world filled with fear - climate change, AI, political upheaval - shamanism helps us find our centre, our calm in the storm. And when we get knocked down, we have the tools to realign ourselves once again.
The Transformation: From Disconnection to Deep Belonging
We see the transformation in our Mystery School members. When the results from the 2021 census became public, we reached out to our members to ask how shamanism has helped them in their lives. Before shamanism, they described feeling:
- 1Disconnected – Lost, unrooted, fragmented, confused.
Shamanism has given them grounding, clarity, and peace. It has become their rock. - 2Alone – Isolated, misunderstood, longing for belonging.
Shamanism has connected them with a supportive, like-minded tribe. - 3Searching – Feeling like something is missing, looking for meaning.
Shamanism has given them purpose, direction, and tools to connect with their spirit guides. - 4Emotionally Overwhelmed – Struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, depression.
Shamanism has helped them trust themselves, develop self-awareness, and accept who they are.
It’s a game-changer. In times when so much feels out of our control, this is a path to reclaiming what truly matters.

The Path Forward
The growing interest in shamanism is not a trend. It’s a reclamation: a remembering of what was lost.
The answers have always been here, waiting for us in the land beneath our feet, in the whisper of the wind, in the guidance of the animals, in the old stories and sacred places and in the Otherworld.
If you feel drawn to this path, trust that feeling. It’s calling you home.
The wisdom has always been there, waiting for you to listen. Let’s take this journey together.
Spreading the word
If you know someone who would benefit from this blog, feel free to share it with them. Your support in spreading the word means so much!

My connection is to the Earth, it is my only release, and I am different spiritually and emotionally. I am a Christian and that is important to me. I am a Earth sign, and I am embedded into her deeply..
I find wandering through this world very heavy and people who are not like me spiritually. I speak to the birds, and we have relationships, I write and poet about the earth and the birds and nature. I pour sadness out of my heart to things I cannot change, and yet it will educate others like me, and that is important to me.
The Buzzard is my spiritual bird.
This is such a beautiful relationship you describe here, thank you for sharing Deborah 🙂
After taking a break of several years from the Pagan and shamanic communities I have been incredibly surprised to find how many people are interested in shamanism on my return. I've got 12 people from the Central Lancashire catchment area alone booked in to my second shamanic circle with hardly advertising and had to limit it to that although more are interested. I will give a shoutout for your course that evening.
This is so amazing to hear Sister Patience. I am made up for you 🙂
How affirming for you that you are really on to something here.
And thank you so much for the shoutout. We are really grateful.
Wow just wow! Totally blown away I feel the call home. All my life I have felt something missing sort of disconnected with the world not fitting in, anyway recently I've felt a deep connection with nature and wildlife, trees and fungi, anyway I was a Christian also but felt trapped I've had what you would call an awakening and I thirst for more
I am so chuffed to read your note here Sharon. I can absolutely relate to what you are saying – when I found shamanism it all clicked into place. I am so excited for you 🙂
Honouring time worn traditions is never more relevant than now,in these times of outer world change. Shamanic practice feels complete as its central point is Mother Nature and her four directions. I love it that this group is UK based where I live. Rather like eating a macrobiotic diet spiritually.🌿
Hi Stella, I am smiling at your macrobiotic diet reference! Thank you for your note here – absolutely 🙂
I think we have been having this conversation elsewhere Nicola. I am one who came reluctantly to shamanism because of cultural (and religious) conditiong, yet here I finally am. And I m not about to leave anytime soon, not now I've got here
We have Pam. Hearing your story has been quite incredible for me. It is amazing how everything slots together eh.
Today I sat under my old oak tree on the edge of the woodland and shut out the world and just focused on listening to the sounds of the woods and the birds. It was a blissful half hour in a busy day and I felt the beating heart of the woodland. I know shamanism is the right pathway for me, it speaks to me on so many different levels. Nearly 3 years in the mystery school and it’s been transformative for me. Wonderful words, thank you Nicola x
Ah thank you Carolyn. And it is incredible the transformation that you have been on. I was totally under that oak tree just then with you 🙂 x
Connection with nature is what will bring you home if you are ever lost.
I understand this now after being a Mystery School member, get out in nature and you will find your self, your body, mind, soul and spirit.
Thank you Nicola for a beautifully written message.
Ash ever Jacinta, your words are so beautifully put. And bob on. Thank you so much for this 🙂
Thank you. Way of the Buzzard is a rock in these tumultuous and disturbing times. A touch stone that grounds us and helps us stand firm! You always put the community first – through covid and now through these difficult times too. Thank you
Ah, thank you so much for these sentiments Karen, we really appreciated hearing this. Truth is, we thrive of this community as much as everyone. Community is everything, eh 🙂
I love that picture of you stretching skyward while your feet are grounded at the rocky summit! The mixture of types of cloud "nearby"
illustrates a point very nicely, in my view – our closeness to the elementals: within, outside, and beyond! Reminding me yet again of the pleasure and meaning I have derived from drum journeys with The Way of The Buzzard over the past five years <3
Just marvellous reflections Kathy. Five years! Wowser. It has gone so fast!
Beautiful summary of why so many of us are in crisis right now.
Thank you Nicola 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for your note Sylvie, this is great to hear this
